Orchestra (Elective)

Overview

This Semester 1 subject builds on the foundations laid in the College’s Years 5 and 6 Orchestra Elective. Here, students focus on developing musical skills, artistic sensitivity and expressive capabilities in order to develop self-esteem, creativity, and deep processing skills. Undertaking a weekly double orchestra session, large ensemble rehearsal and small group instrumental lesson, students in the Year 7 Orchestra Elective gain valuable life skills such as teamwork, patience, discipline, respect and focus.

Note: Year 7 Orchestra weekly rehearsals continue into Semester 2 once the Classroom Music component has ended

Aims

  • To develop students' ability to play an orchestral instrument
  • To experience playing and performing with an orchestra
  • To learn a variety of orchestral repertoire covering a range of genres
  • To foster a greater appreciation of the elements of music and their role in musical works
  • To develop better sight-reading and music theory skills
  • To be able to write a review of a live music concert

  • Computer Technology/ Digital Music Creation 

Time Allocation

  • 4 periods per cycle for one semester
  • Instrumental Lesson (Orchestra students only)
  • Whole group rehearsal (Orchestra students only)

Requirements

  • Levy Cost
  • Estimated cost for instrument hire and small group instrument lessons for one full academic year is $550.00 (Approximately $140.00 if paying in term installments)
