Outdoor Education: Bush (Elective)

OVERVIEW

Students experience first-hand God’s creation by hiking and camping out overnight. They learn about the skills involved in cooking in the bush and how to pack a back-pack and assemble a tent. Students also participate in outdoor experiences such as caving, bush survival skills, river sledding and mountain bike riding. They learn the basics of orienteering and navigation and put themselves to the test in a team environment on the Cardinia Reservoir Park orienteering course.

SUBJECT LENGTH

  • 5 periods per cycle for Semester 2

TOPICS INCLUDE

  • Hiking, trangia and tent preparation
  • Mountain bike riding
  • Caving
  • Orienteering

PREREQUISITES

  • Levy Cost
  • Must be competent on a bike and be able to ride for an extended period of time

ASSESSMENT

  • Adoption of camp craft practices while on overnight camp 25%
  • Participation during outdoor experiences 25%
  • Bike assignment 20%
  • Orienteering 20%
  • Attitude and Effort 10%
